Model-Based Development: Preparing Students for Industry

Shigeho Sakoda, Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd.

Model‐based development using MATLAB and Simulink improves development efficiency and is becoming a standard approach. However, it has a short history and has some issues to solve. To that end, the Japanese automotive industry has established the Japan MATLAB Automotive Advisory Board (JMAAB), which discusses those issues based on its philosophy, “Collaborate for the development environment, compete for the product.” This webinar discusses the current status and deliverables of the JMAAB working group that is creating MBD engineer education curricula and materials. In addition, expectations for the junior MBD engineer will also be discussed.

About the Presenter: Shigeho Sakoda, an engineer at Yamaha Motor Japan, has focused on engine management systems for motorcycle, natural gas, and other engines for the last 20 years. For the last 10 years, he has also promoted the model-based development (MBD) approach. Sakoda is also on the faculty of the Department of Engineering at Kagoshima University, Japan. He is a member of the Japan MATLAB Automotive Advisory Board (JMAAB) and is leading an educational working group. The group published ETSS-JMAAB, the guideline for engineering skill and career standards, in 2007 and is currently developing curricula for MBD engineers.
