My aim is to find the position of the object in the image in terms of x and y co-ordinates. What technology or algorithm is used to find the position?

You can use the Image Processing Toolbox. If you have that, then try running my Image Segmentation Tutorial http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/?term=authorid%3A31862 It will be a good start for you. Come back with your image and code if you run into any problems.
