Using adaphisteq on a round image

Hello,
Im using matlab to do some basic image preprocessing for deep learning. This is the data that i have :
All i want to do is use the adapthisteq function on the image only on the part shown in white in the mask above without changing the image dimension or background values.
When i try to use the function even though it does a nice work, it does change the values of the background ( which i guess that they also influence the result) which causes problems later in the deep learning part.
I can't seem to find the syntax to do this without breaking something else. I tried to change the values to NaN but the function does change them back to 0.
If nothing works i will just use the algorithm as that and then change the background values back to 0 from the mask, but i could use this help for any problems in the future.
