Teaching, Applied Research, and Development: From Academia to Industry
Prof. Dr. Raoul Herzog, University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HEIG-VD)
The University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland’s mission consists of developing practice-oriented engineers for industry, and driving innovations through R&D projects. This talk addresses both educational and examples of applied R&D projects carried out in the Institute of Industrial Automation (iAi) in Yverdon-les-Bains.
A diploma project is presented where a "ball on wheel" motion control demonstrator was developed using Simulink®. A camera delivers images at a rate of 1000 frames per second over CameraLink to a real-time target. The controller outputs the desired torque over EtherCAT to the motor drive.
Additionally, two R&D projects are also highlighted: In the first, a simultaneous volumetric dosing system comprising up to 500 syringes was developed in a KTI/CTI project for the company Contexa SA. The system is used for dosing ingredients in food and cosmetics industry. The second R&D project is about generating optimal reference trajectories for fast and precise machining. The challenge consists in preventing structural vibrations causing bad surface quality of the machined parts.
