MATLAB and Simulink Seminars

High Integrity Software Development and Certification with MATLAB

Overview

In this seminar, we will explore high-quality software development for high integrity applications for medical and aerospace/defense industries, emphasizing the compliance with certification objectives required by the FDA and FAA. We will use a case study focused on a wearable ECG monitoring device, demonstrating how a robust software development framework using MathWorks tools can be applied to algorithm design and deployment in these fields.

The seminar will first cover the certification requirements as specified by standards IEC 62304 for medical device software and DO-178C/DO-331 for aerospace software.

Additionally, we will discuss verification and validation processes essential for compliance with the standards in both industries, where “good code” means software free of unintended behavior. Participants will learn techniques identifying quality gaps, and measuring and improving overall application quality.

This seminar will be followed by a hands-on workshop on MATLAB Online where participants will get a chance to try out the testing and certification workflows. Attendees are requested to bring their laptops for the hands-on workshop.

Highlights

  • Overview of IEC 62304 and DO-178C Certification Standards and their common approach to high-integrity software.
  • Link, trace, and verify your application requirements from your MATLAB design all the way to your deployed code.
  • Automate the testing in CI/CD systems.
  • Identify untested code paths and potential bugs with advanced model & structural coverage metrics.
  • Generate certification artifacts for submission with FDA and FAA.

Who Should Attend

Engineers and scientists who work in the medical and aerospace sectors and need to comply with certification standards. People who develop software applications where reliability is crucial will also find value in this seminar.

About the Presenter

Andres Adam: Application Engineer focused on aerospace applications. He covers many different areas, including signal processing, physical modeling, code generation, and certification processes. Prior to working at MathWorks, Andres received a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering working in aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, and aeroacoustics with high-speed compressible flows.

Raymond G. Estrada Jr.: an aerospace engineer with 26+ years of industry experience, 14+ of which are with the MathWorks. During his tenure at MathWorks, Raymond has specialized in helping customers apply Model-Based Design for high-integrity software development and V&V. He also has experience in controls & dynamics, embedded systems and extensive experience with the certification of airborne systems. Raymond is in our Consulting organization and has helped many of our heavy users by leveraging his vast MathWorks tools experience.

Akhilesh Mishra: Global Medical Device Industry Manager with over a decade of experience in software engineering, signal processing, and data science, with a focus on developing impactful solutions for healthcare applications. Akhilesh works closely with regulatory authorities such as the FDA on scientific projects and studies, leveraging his expertise in medical devices development and certification. Prior to MathWorks he was the signal processing lead in a group working on radar systems for sounding the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica to study global sea-level rise.
