Why does MATLAB 2014a get stuck in the splash screen? (Unix)

Hello,
I have successfully installed MATLAB 2014a on a Unix system (Xubuntu 14.04 - 64-bit).
I can start MATLAB in the console-only mode without the GUI, but I can't start it with the GUI. When I try to start it, the splash screen appears, but it just gets stuck there forever.
It might be notable, that I was able to install and run MATLAB on different hardware, but the same software (Xubuntu 14.04 - 64-bit).
Is it a problem with Java? How can I solve it?
I'd glad to hear any recommendations.

Contact TMW directly @ mathworks.com for installation/startup issues, even if Student License.

I met the same problem in MATLAB r2015b installed in CentOS.
