What is the best stepwise regression method?

I am trying to use stepwiselm but keep running out of memory for a large dataset (approx. 3500 by 25). I have 10 predictor varibales in my model. Is there a way around it? Also, is there a way to reduce or delete the interaction variables? I tried using stepfit but facing issues as my dataset containes strings and numbers.
