appears to be a set of functions. You will need to use a cell array of function handles and index it like tau{i,j}(t)
You will need a loop similar to
denom = 0;
for m = reshape(unique(U_k), 1, [])
denom = denom + t{i,m}(t).^alpha .* eta(i,m).^beta;
end
