Calling another program

Can anyone tell me whether I can call another program and extract data from another program while running MATLAB? Your answer will be appreciated!!
I using MATLAB for image processing. I need to pass a command to different program for getting an image data..

You could start with the "system" command:
[status,result] = system('program arguments');
If you need more complex interaction you could take a look on pipes and other solutions, see for example this thread: http://www.mathworks.co.uk/matlabcentral/answers/12913-can-i-give-matlab-commands-in-series-from-the-os-command-prompt
