Can I use the model for a single phase asynchronous machine to simulate a single phase squirrel cage induction motor I rescued from an old washing machine.

I am guessing to use the electrical simscape model of a single phase induction motor (spim) there are a number of parameters/values I need to know/input to the model.
Unfortunately the spim I rescued from the old washing machine does not have a nameplate, so I dont know any parameters apart from 240v and 50 Hz operation.
Is it possible to power up the motor and carry out various tests to find the parameters/data I need ?

It is indeed possible to determine the parameters of a single-phase induction motor (SPIM) through various tests, even in the absence of a nameplate. These tests typically involve measuring electrical and mechanical characteristics under different conditions. Here are some common tests and the parameters they help to determine:
No-Load Test:
  • Purpose: To determine no-load losses, magnetizing current, and magnetizing reactance.
  • Procedure: Run the motor at rated voltage and frequency without any mechanical load. Measure the no-load current (Io) and no-load power (Po).
Locked-Rotor Test (or Blocked Rotor Test):
  • Purpose: To determine starting torque, locked-rotor current, and equivalent circuit parameters.
  • Procedure: Lock the rotor to prevent it from turning and apply reduced voltage until rated current is drawn. Measure the input voltage (Vr), current (Ir), and power (Pr). This test must be done quickly to prevent overheating.
DC Resistance Test:
  • Purpose: To determine winding resistance.
  • Procedure: Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the motor windings.
Impedance Test:
  • Purpose: To determine the impedance of the windings.
  • Procedure: Apply an AC voltage to the winding and measure the current to calculate impedance.
Load Test:
  • Purpose: To determine efficiency, slip, and load characteristics.
  • Procedure: Apply mechanical loads to the motor and measure input power, output power, speed, and current at different load levels.
High-Frequency Response Test:
  • Purpose: To analyze the stator and rotor leakage inductances.
  • Procedure: Apply a high-frequency voltage to the motor and measure the response.
Remember, each test requires careful setup and safety precautions as you will be dealing with electrical power. The data obtained from these tests can then be used to derive the motor’s equivalent circuit parameters, such as resistance, reactance, and losses, which are essential for simulating the motor in software like Simscape.
Note
If you're not experienced with these types of electrical tests, it's highly recommended to seek assistance from someone who has the necessary expertise and equipment. Incorrect handling of electrical testing can be dangerous.

Many thanks for your detailed reply.
I have just been reading some of the MATLAB information on speed control of spim and it all seems to be around FOC. I was hoping to use V/F, but it might be better to change to FOC as I will be relying on MATLAB and people like yourself for support and assistance ?
