Letting my user choose a subset of a plot

Using app designer, I am displaying a lot of line plots. In some of these, I would like to allow my user to select a subset of the data by clicking and dragging, and then use that subset for the remainder of several steps of calculations. Although it would not be my first choice, I could work with the "zoom in" feature provided that I could programmatically retrieve the current zoom limits of the plot. But my preference would be to simply let the user drag from left to right, providing some sort of visual feedback in the process, and then zoom the graph myself. Or perhaps, change the color of the selected portion.
What is possible along these lines?
