Any method which can be used to extract the people count from real time video input.

I am a post graduate student undertaking a project which needs to calculate a real time count of people present in a video input. Is there any particular method which can be used to generate the real time count of people present in video input. I have checked the vip people tracking demo but cant move forward. please guide me.
