How to update file names and save file contents in workspace.

Hello, I want to get output like this and save the each variable (a1, a2, ....) in the workspace individually with name a1, a2,...... for further analysis,
a1= Y(:,:,1);
a2= Y(:,:,2);
a3= Y(:,:,3);
............
an= Y(:,:,4);
Why the all variables ((a1, a2, ....) are not saved in the workspace-rather than erased. Got only the last variable. Moreover, name of the variable is also not updated as 'an'
Code:
for i = 1:43
j = 'a';
b= [j num2str(i)];
b = Y(:,:,i);
end
