Your routine simple() returns a cell array of strings, but your code expects a string.
Change your lines
%function [stem] = porterdupe(y)
function stems = porterdupe(~)
t = simple();
to
function [stem] = porterdupe(y)
t = y;
Add a new file find_stems.m
function results = find_stems()
t = simple();
results = cellfun(@porterdupe, t);
Now instead of running porterdupe directly, run find_stems
