change of independent variables in symbolic functions

the title may not be very explanatory, so; i have experimental data of L vs a, and also another data of D vs L, i've already fitted curves for each of them, so i have two polynomial symbolic functions which are L=L(a) and D=D(L). now i want to have the symbolic expression of D as a function of a D=D(a) how can i do that? thanks in advance.
