Matlab control other softwares

I am interested in using matlab to control the operation of other softwares that have been installed in my computer. For example, i installed the unscrambler x software, i see a lot of dll files in the program files folder. I know Matlab can communicate with dll files, but i'm not sure whether my purpose is archievable.
