Conversion of video to images

I would like to know the procedure to convert a video(preferably mp4 or avi format) to images(frames) of any standard format in matlab

You could give aviread a try. Otherwise look in the file exchange, there are tools for dealing with files in many video-formats there. But why not do the conversion with mencoder outside of matlab and then read the images as per usual? Mencoder is a general tool designed for this and only this type of task.
