How to apply edge detection method to video analysis to identify the area of interest?

We are doing video analysis to obtain a vector field. In the video there are areas of interest and we don't want to see the vector fields of other areas. To detect the areas of interest, I think we need to use edge detection. I just would like to ask how can I implement the edge detection code for video analysis? Also do you think that it would work?
