maths behind functions

hi, i'm asking a lot of questions at the moment - i hope that's okay.
i'm studying digital signal processing at the moment and so we're often asked to implement MATLAB code from the ground up, and if we use any functions in MATLAB we have to show that we know exactly what is going on.
I mostly know about the functions I'm using, but sometimes it'd be good to be able to see what's behind the function - in terms of mathematical processes. Is this possible?
Maybe we could use the freqz tool as an example.
Thanks

Hi Tom, freqz.m does have an open implementation. So if you edit the M-file, freqz.m, you can see the code. The bulk of the work inside that program is done by the subfunctions, firfreqz.m and iirfreqz.m.
