Any ideas on capturing movement of coastlin

I am having a coastline whose movement I need to capture. For each coastline, there are x and y coordinate vectors. Problem is that each of them has different no. of datapoints.
For coastline 1, x and y are 1788X1 For coastline 2, x and y are 1655X1
I want to compute the average distance the coastline has moved. Any ideas or suggestions?

Read about interpolation. Go for interpolation and get the data to same dimensions. Read about interp1.
