There has been extensive research into mammography image processing. I can't review all the papers, but you can go here: http://www.visionbib.com/bibliography/contentsmedical.html#Medical%20Applications,%20CAT,%20MRI,%20Ultrasound,%20Heart%20Models,%20Brain%20Models. Try to find some kind of overview paper, or else a recent one that compares it's algorithm to prior "best" ones.
