Use this in a callback:
close(gcbf)
Example:
f=figure(1);clf(1)
uicontrol('parent',f,...
'units','normalized',...
'position',[1/3 1/3 1/3 1/3],...
'String','Close me!',...
'Callback','close(gcbf)')
