What is the meaning of groups in importCaffeNetwork()?

Hi,
I have the caffe model and tried to import it by using this:-
net = importCaffeNetwork(protofile,datafile)
And then I have an error message:-
The layer 'hg1_low6_low6_low6_up5' contains 256 groups. Maximum number of groups supported is 2
What is the meaning of group here?

256 sounds like uint8 0 to 255. I suspect that layer is expecting two-level rather than 256 levels. Expecting black and white in other words, but not necessarily {0,1} or {0, 255}, just any two distinct values.
