bitmap generating alternative to the 'pcolor' command

When I use
pcolor
I get as many colored areas, each of them individually located, as I have data points. That can become a huge number of elements in a figure and is unhandy for further treatment in vector-paint programs.
I would prefer to get a bitmap just of the colors but still have the lines and annotation in a vector format. Is there any suggestion how to do this with data on a constantly spaced grid?
A complicated way might be to take the data matrix, interpolate the data to a regular grid and use the command
figure
but may be there is a more elegant way ?
