Where do I start from to create a spatial 2D contour plot?

Hello, I want to create a 2d contour plot where it will show the temperature in the specific locations of 6 sensors. x is length,y is width and z being values of (length,width)
Probably the worst way, I did the following: Created a matrix, namely
yo=
[0 0 0 0 0 0 0;
0 7 0 5 0 3 0;
0 0 0 0 0 0 0;
0 0 0 0 0 0 0;
0 0 0 0 0 0 0 ;
0 5 0 8 0 6 0;
0 0 0 0 0 0 0]
so that each value is placed where a sensor is
and then typed contour(yo). Any hint to get me started on a proper way of doing it?
