How does one accept an answer?

I'm going to answer my own question because I had a lot of trouble figuring it out. Yes, there is an "accept this answer" button, clearly visible beside the question and answer ... but only if no answer has yet been accepted! I had a question which was answered (basically, "there's no easy way to do that, it's an OS limitation") but then another writer posted a useful workaround. I wanted to accept the latter but there was no "accept" button ... until I clicked the "Unaccept" button by the first answer.

Only one answer can be accepted, as you have figured it out unaccepting and accepting the latter which you find useful for the need.
There is an exception though:
