David - from audioread, you could do (assuming that location is the name of (and path to) the audio file
[x1,fs] = audioread(location);
If you need to know the bits per sample, then you can use audioinfo as
info = audioinfo(location);
to get a structure that will have a field corresponding to the bits per sample.
