problem with installation MFITSIO

Hello all.
I have MacOSX 10.7.5 and I would like to install MFITSIO interface for Matlab (<http://public.lanl.gov/eads/mfitsio/> ). So, I downloaded source file (<http://public.lanl.gov/eads/mfitsio/download/src/> ) and I have make-file with option "CC = mex" and other options. But I can't do just "make" in source directory, because bash don't know about mex. And I try to use mex in Matlab.
How can I use Makefile with mex?
If I try to compile without Makefile, how can I do Makefile-command sort of
fits_read_image.c $(HEADERS) $(C_FILES)
$(CC) fits_read_image.c $(CFLAGS)
with mex? That is use headers and other options.
