How to: xtick visibility

how can i make xtick line visible: example, at 6 it is visible, but where there is data it is not...

aH = axes;
hist(randn(1,1000));
set(aH,'TickDir','out');
Alternatively:
figure(2);
aH = axes;
hist(randn(1,1000));
h = findobj(aH,'Type','patch');
set(h,'facealpha',0.5)
