How can I get notifications when someone replies to an answer or to a comment?

When I'm answering questions in the forums and such, I haven't received any notifications when someone comments after my comment or an answer, and instead, I have to go through my questions every time. Is there a place to check this?

There is no automated notification for such cases.
If you click on the "My Answers" or "My Comments" link, then the results are shown sorted by newest activity first. If you are not the person shown as having done the newest activity, then there has been change since what you last made your change. There is, though, no direct way to tell if you already read the changes for any given Question.
