Passing 2D Numpy Array into MATLAB Engine

I'm trying to call matlab's imagesc() within python. I have 2 1D np.arrays (X and Y) and a 2D np.array (Z) that I would like to pass to imagesc(). I have attempted to convert each of these numpy array to lists without luck.
How can I pass multidimensional numpy array to the MATLAB engine?
