Why won't my installation activate?

After downloading and installing the Student version of MATLAB, I attempted to activate automatically. After that failed due to connectivity issues, I attempted to activate with no firewall, and to activate manually, both of which failed. I am running Windows 8.

I had the same problem after converting from the free 30-day trial to an officially purchased student license. I called the help number (508-647-7000) and they walked me through deleting the trial license and making sure Matlab went to the newly purchased license. It took all of 5 minutes and I'm up and running.
