Plotting serial data at 50Hz

I have written an m-function to capture, format, and plot a 50Hz serial data stream. This uses the serial data stream design pattern, and the plot is setup to resemble a strip chart. The m-function works as expected, except for the fact that there is a large (8-10 second) delay between when the data stream changes and the change is reflected in the plot.
The m-function has been optimized as much as possible, with all of the following graphic recommendations being adhered to. Can anyone suggest a reason for the delay? Am I doing something wrong, or have I simply hit the limit of what MATLAB is capable of without moving to a real-time windows target?
I have included the m-function below - sorry for the length, but this is the cut down version!
