do i need to change it to ./ or use .\ ???

You probably want the vectorized version?
h_L=0.86./sqrt(3+(1./2./lambda_i)+(0.86.*l.*u_B./pi./g./D_i).^2);
Everything will be element by element instead of matrix division
doc vectorize

./ for right and .\ for left division
