Isolated DC-DC conversion using high-frequency transformer - Two-switch topology with automatic core reset - Reduced voltage stress
The Two-Switch Forward Converter is an isolated DC-DC power converter topology widely used for medium to high power applications. It utilizes two active switches on the primary side of a high-frequency transformer to transfer energy from the input to the output during the ON period.
Unlike single-switch forward converters, this topology provides inherent core reset through clamp diodes, eliminating the need for additional reset windings. This reduces transformer stress and improves reliability.
During operation, both switches turn ON simultaneously, applying the input voltage across the transformer primary. Energy is transferred directly to the secondary side and delivered to the load through rectifier diodes and an LC filter. When the switches turn OFF, the magnetizing energy is reset through diodes, ensuring proper transformer operation without saturation.
The converter offers improved efficiency, reduced voltage stress on switches, and better utilization of the transformer compared to traditional forward converters. It is commonly used in switched-mode power supplies, EV auxiliary power systems, and industrial DC power applications.
