Linear systems are particularly tractable because their behaviour can be fully characterised using a matrix representation of their dynamics allowing their future evolution to be determined exactly for all time. This makes it possible to build a complete and predictive map of the system's behaviour and quickly classify stability, something that is generally not possible for nonlinear systems.
