Do you need to place a legend in the bottom centre of your figure? It may happen that a southoutside-located LEGEND will overlap with your graph axes. To overcome that I use AXLEGEND.

The enhancement can be applied to figures with a single plot or with a set of subplots. Consult the hlp part and the demo example.

The current version will be updated further (varargin, column-legend). Hope this inspires more custom legend functions.
