Butler received the B.S. degree in engineering from Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, CA, in 1989, the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1990, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), in 2013.
