Model Smarter: Bioreactor Modeling and Optimization with MATLAB, Simulink, and SimBiology

Start Time End Time
23 Sep 2025, 11:00 AM EDT 23 Sep 2025, 12:30 PM EDT

Overview

Bioreactors are central to chemical, pharmaceutical, and food manufacturing processes—making their accurate modeling and optimization essential for efficiency and innovation. In this session, we’ll explore how MATLAB, Simulink, and SimBiology can streamline and enhance the design, simulation, and optimization of bioreactors.

You’ll learn how to develop bioreactor models, estimate reaction kinetics parameters, and run parameter scans for different operating conditions. Whether you're a student building your foundation, a researcher refining your models, or an industry professional seeking scalable solutions, this session will equip you with a powerful suite of tools for process modeling and optimization. Join us to see how modern modeling tools can accelerate your chemical and biochemical engineering workflows—from classroom concepts to industrial applications.

Highlights

  • Bioreactor modeling and optimization using MATLAB, Optimization Toolbox, and Global Optimization Toolbox
  • Reaction kinetics modeling in Simulink, along with sensitivity analysis and parameter estimation with Simulink Design Optimization
  • Bioreactor simulation, parameter estimation, and parameter scanning in SimBiology

Who Should Attend

Chemical engineers, students, researchers or anyone interested in bioreactor modeling, reaction kinetics, process modeling and optimization.

About the Presenters

Aycan Hacioglu oversees Chemical Engineering at MathWorks. With a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, she previously taught at the University of Missouri's Chemical Engineering Department for over three years, heavily utilizing MATLAB in her teaching and research. Aycan is eager to share her insights and enthusiasm for applying MathWorks products to chemical engineering challenges.

Marco Avila Ponce de León received a BS degree in Mathematics from the National University of Mexico and an MS and PhD degrees in Mathematics from the University of Minnesota. Prior to his current position as a senior application engineer at MathWorks for Quantitative Systems Pharmacology, he held positions within academia and the pharmaceutical industry, working on developing mathematical models of biological systems. His current research interests lie in developing mathematical models and computational techniques to answer questions in support of drug development. In his current role at MathWorks, he helps pharmaceutical companies use SimBiology optimally to perform their modeling projects.

Kishen Mahadevan is a Senior Product Manager in the Controls and Deep Learning Marketing Group at MathWorks. In his role, he leads initiatives to promote and drive the adoption of control products, collaborating closely with development teams to shape the strategic product roadmap. Prior to moving into product marketing, Kishen spent two years as an Application Support Engineer at MathWorks, providing guidance to customers on Simulink workflows, with a particular emphasis on physical modeling, controls, and deep learning applications. Kishen holds an M.S. in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Control Systems, from Arizona State University, and a B.E. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University, India.
