Object detection via edge finder or template matching

Hi,
Has anyone had good luck with a robust method for template matching or edge detection. I am taking CAD pictures similar to the attached files and trying to compare them to constructed models of the CAD objects, with varying background, lighting, etc.
So far, I have found several edge finding and template matching algorithms that i have attempted to modify, but none of them have proven very robust to changes in lighting between the CAD ideal image and the picture taken.
Any assistance or ideas of ways to go about this would be greatly appreciated!
