Error creating Java object within MATLAB

I'm able to successfully create an instance of this object directly in Java, but have the following error when creating it directly in MATLAB.
Loading classifier from edu/stanford/nlp/models/ner/english.all.3class.distsim.crf.ser.gz ... java.lang.IllegalStateException: unread block data
at java.io.ObjectInputStream$BlockDataInputStream.setBlockDataMode(ObjectInputStream.java:2399)
at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readObject0(ObjectInputStream.java:1359)
at java.io.ObjectInputStream.defaultReadFields(ObjectInputStream.java:1969)
... It goes on like this for a while. The full error output is attached.
Any thoughts why this only occurs in MATLAB, and how to fix it? The model its loading is somewhat large (>100MB).
