Human Emotion recognition project help

First of all, I don't have the code yet for this project. I just want to ask first what would be the good approach/way to do this project before I start with the code (although I'm not that good in MATLAB). So our project is emotion recognition. What we have proposed so far is to make a database for the features and color. And then the test image will be compare to the database. Do you think that's a good approach? Can you suggest some other approach to do this better.and also help me about the algorithms which i can use.

There has been image processing in this field. See Section 21.3.6 (and subdivisions) here: http://iris.usc.edu/Vision-Notes/bibliography/contentspeople.html#Face%20Recognition,%20Detection,%20Tracking,%20Gesture%20Recognition,%20Fingerprints,%20Biometrics. I can't recommend an algorithm but after you pick one and code it up, then we can help with MATLAB coding (syntax, program flow, efficiency, error messages, etc.).
