On the left side you have the function g subscript m,n and on the right hand side you have the function g with no subscript. Is g with no subscript a different function than g subscript m,n ?

xyprime = @(m, theta, x, y) a^(-m) * [cos(theta) sin(theta); -sin(theta) cos(theta) * [x;y];
g2 = @(xy) g(xy(1), xy(2));
gmn = @(m, n, x, y) a^(-2*m) * g2(xyprime(m, 2 * pi * n / L, x, y));
