How implement target code for Processor in the loop (PIL)

I have developed a target (tlcs, tmf, main, external mode,...) to implement a Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation. And now I want to implement a Processor-in-the-Loop simulation with my specific hardware. Do I need some extra main? or extra code on the target side? I have seen that I need a connection, but that's not enough Thanks in advance!!
