simple access to Matlab script via http

I would like to access the Matlab svd function over the web e.g. via a socket or http. All I need to do is send it an array, invoke svd on it, and get the result. The current approach for this seems pretty involved - building a standalone Java application that can run SVD, and then invoking the Java application from a web server. Is there a simpler way for my simple application?
