How can I use an IP camera for Image Processing

I'm starting to work on a new project based on a autonomus mobile vehicule. I would like to use an IP camera, to recognize different fixed points along the way to use them as waypoints. I would like some ideas for this, like whether use video streaming or take pictures. Also if someone knows about a specific model of IP camera that I can use for this I would really appreciate any help.
