what would be the maximum possible size of a matrix, and how to overcome this problem?

Hi,
a bit old but still valid I think:

And also more or less valid:

Since out = rand(10^9,4) gives an out of memory on 64bit but out = rand(10^9,3) works.
And you can run
[str,maxsize] = computer
in order to figure out the maximum number of elements allowed in an array with this version of MATLAB. See doc under
http://www.mathworks.com/help/releases/R2011a/techdoc/ref/computer.html
