MatLab not recognising compilers on Ubuntu 12.10

At the end of the installation process I am told that I need compilers installed for MatLab compiler to work and given a link to the supported compilers. However, I have both gcc and g++ (gpp) installed with the latest versions. If I click "next" and activate MatLab anyway, it does not show up as a program anywhere on my computer. Is there any way to fix this?

Do you mean the MATLAB program (or its icons) don't show up anywhere on your computer after the installation program has totally finished?

I think the compiler message is a red herring here.
Typically, the installer will put a link at /usr/local/bin/matlab; here is what the installer did on my Ubuntu system:
local@ubuntu:~$ ls -l /usr/local/bin/matlab
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Feb 10 22:28 /usr/local/bin/matlab -> /usr/local/MATLAB/R2013b/bin/matlab
So, assuming /usr/local/bin is on your search path, "matlab" from a Terminal window should be sufficent to start MATLAB. If you find a Launcher icon more convenient, you can create one by right-clicking on the MATLAB icon that appears after you start it and selecting "Lock to Launcher".
