please I need Help with Hamming code (7,4) encoding/decoding

hey guys I am doing encoding/decoding hamming code (7.4) I need a way to divide the input message (up to 255 bits) into block of 4 bits so i can apply hamming code in each block individually. I have to use simple operations to implement hamming code.

What format is the input message in? I.e., what type and size of variable do you have to work with?
