When dealing with (linear) ODEs which have a solutions that decay/grow approximately exponentially is there anyway to get the inbuilt solvers to periodically scale down/up the solution so it avoids a problem with absolute error tolerances (or the general issues with having very small numbers). Or is there an obvious solution to this problem that I am missing?

I can't find an option to use dynamic scaling in the built-in ODE solvers of MATLAB, so I suppose it's not possible, but could you elaborate a bit more on what dynamic scaling is?

Maybe there is a way to implement it or ask MathWorks to add dynamic scaling as a feature.

Do you have any papers (or other resources) on the subject?

Are you seeing limitations with the current ODE solvers on a specific ODE problem?
